Data-driven sustainability in the development of autoinjectors
In the Sustainability issue of ONdrug Delivery magazine, SHL Medical’s Frederick Gertz and Yves Steffen outline the company’s approach to green initiatives that leverage the convergence of data science and sustainability.
Sustainability issues are rapidly changing the business landscape, yet many business organizations would still argue that commercial and sustainability goals cannot be mutually beneficial and inclusive. Here, the authors demonstrate the synergy of these two seemingly contrasting goals in the development of SHL’s autoinjectors. According to Gertz and Steffen, sustainability is efficiency – and as such, is an indicator used within the organization’s continuous improvement process to incorporate lean thinking into its production and supply streams. To make this possible, SHL’s data science team processes and analyzes large amounts of disparate data from SHL’s complex manufacturing streams to generate multifaceted value that benefit its sustainability efforts. In closing, the authors outline how SHL will continue to find areas of improvement in sustainable growth and market competitiveness through its data-driven methodology.
