SHL Medical officially joins the Subcutaneous Drug Development & Delivery Consortium
February 17 2025
SHL Medical is now member of the Subcutaneous Drug Development & Delivery Consortium aiming to collectively address the challenges in the subcutaneous industry and actively contribute towards patients’ independence globally.
SHL Medical (hereinafter referred to as "SHL"), a world-leading provider of advanced drug delivery systems supporting a broad spectrum of formulations for subcutaneous administration in a variety of injection volumes, officially joined the Subcutaneous Drug Development & Delivery Consortium (hereinafter referred to as "SC Consortium").
Subcutaneous drug delivery has become a preferred administration route, with autoinjectors emerging as the standard for self-administration across various treatment areas, including cardiometabolic diseases. Recently, there has been a trend towards formulating higher-volume subcutaneous injectables (3 to 5 mL) to expand into new therapeutic areas, such as oncology. However, subcutaneous drug delivery poses unique challenges, including issues with bioavailability, drug stability and viscosity, patient comfort and experience, high-dose/high-volume delivery, and sustainability. Addressing these challenges is critical for optimizing treatment outcomes and enhancing the patient experience – a shared goal of SHL Medical and SC Consortium.
SC Consortium aims to address these challenges by leading fundamental advancements in subcutaneous drug development and delivery. Additionally, it acts as a collaborative hub for its members, providing opportunities for networking, strategic partnerships and open discussions to drive innovative, precompetitive solutions
As Governing Board member, SHL will contribute to guiding the overall strategic direction of the Subcutaneous Drug Development & Delivery Consortium and steer output development. The organization will be represented by Alex Lyness, Head of Innovation Strategy & Applied Research at SHL, and Alexander Heinrich, Global Head Product Management at SHL.
